History of the village tells us that the first organized fire company in Piermont was employees of the New York and Erie Railroad in 1832.  The railroad shops were beginning to be built and the railroad company organized its own fire department for the protection of their property.

The first rules for the fire department were setup on October 7th, 1851 and some of the rules are the same rules that our fire department is governed by today.  In 1870 the village purchased a piece of property and the first firehouse was erected at a cost of $2000.00.

The first steam engine was purchased by the village in 1891 for a sum on $1800.00 and was to be delivered before March 24th, 1891 from the Button Steam Engine Company.  The steam engine was stored locally until 1920 when it was sold as junk.

The departments first motorized equipment was a converted automobile donated to the fire company and converted into a fire engine by the members of the company.  This was replaced by a Mack Hose Cart in October 1914 and remained in service until 1926 when it was replaced by a 750 gallon Ahern-Fox pumper.  It remained in service till June 1949 when it was wrecked as a result of slippery pavement in Oradell, New Jersey as it was returning from the New Jersey and New York Parade.

A Studebaker Emergency Truck was purchased in 1932, built to carry first aid, emergency equipment in inhalators. This vehicle was purchased by the company.

In 1952 an opportunity was presented to the fire company and an ambulance was purchased from the firemen's funds.  This ambulance was replace in 1953 and again in 1971 with a more modern one, also form the firemen's fund.

A unique addition to the duties and responsibilities of the volunteer firemen was added to the Piermont Fire Department.  Formation of an Underwater Rescue Team was organized by then Fire Chief Thomas Sedlack, Frank McDonald and Phil DeLorenzo, as result of the tragic drowning's, which have happened in the area.

The Piermont Fire Department Underwater Resuce Team was organized on March 11, 1956, the first in New York State made up of volunteer firemen.

The Firemen's memorial, which is located on the south side of the firehouse, is dedicated to the memory of our deceased Firemen.  The dedication ceremonies were  held on October 8, 1960. The Red Granite is inscribed with a maltese cross, and reads as follows "IN MEMORY OF OUR BROTHER FIREMEN WHO HAVE ANSWERED THE LAST CALL." Annual firematic service are held on the morning of Memorial Day.

Today the Piermont Fire Department is serving three capacities 1. Fire Fighting, 2. Ambulance and EMS service, and 3. Underwater Rescue and High Angle Recovery.

More to come!
